Do you have a habit of trying to do everything yourself, even when some things are clearly beyond your ability?
I remember hearing comments like this from the adults around me when I was growing up:
Don’t depend on people for help.
Do things by yourself.
Don’t trouble others.
From this I learned that I should strive to be as self-reliant and independent as possible.
Asking for help meant taking shortcuts and being lazy.
80% of the time, this is sound advice.
But there are times when we don’t have the knowledge or life experience that others have.
That is why corporate roles clearly designate who does what: HR, finance, marketing, sales, legal etc.
No one can possibly know everything, or have the time to learn everything that there is to learn.
If someone can do it faster, should we let them?
If someone can do it for a fraction of what it would cost me to do it myself, should I let them?
