The Purpose of Life

DAY 27, 31 THINGS I LEARNED IN 2023

The purpose of life is not to be happy.

It is to be useful, to be honorable, to be compassionate, to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well.

Ralph Waldo Emerson

I find these words by American essayist, lecturer, philosopher, abolitionist and poet Ralph Waldo Emerson immensely reassuring.

I have always believed that there is something more to life than the pursuit of happiness or achieving SMART goals or our personal gratification.

Happiness is the by-product, not the goal. It comes unbidden, often when we are busy in service to others and the greater good.

When I am living out my purpose, I am living well. The rest – my job title, who I know or who knows me, what suburb I live in – are details.
